How a traffic charge works in Toronto
Toronto is policed by two services for driving offences. The 400-series highways through the city — the 401, 404 and 427 — are OPP. The municipal expressways, the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner, plus arterials such as Lake Shore Boulevard and Allen Road, are Toronto Police Service.
Toronto is the only city in Ontario with three Provincial Offences courts. Which one hears your matter is decided by where the ticket was issued, not where you live, and it is printed on your notice — Toronto South at 92 Front Street East, Toronto East at 1530 Markham Road in Scarborough, or Toronto West at 2700 Eglinton Avenue West.
Toronto Court Services also runs a Court Case Look Up tool, which is the fastest way to confirm your file number and next appearance date before doing anything else.
However the ticket was issued, the three ways to respond are the same: pay the set fine, request an Early Resolution meeting with the prosecutor, or set the matter down for trial. Which is right depends on what the disclosure shows — see the charge you are facing for how each one is defended.

Traffic charges in Toronto — common questions
Which court will hear my Toronto ticket?
Toronto Provincial Offences Court — Three POA court locations: Toronto South (92 Front St E), Toronto East (1530 Markham Rd), Toronto West (2700 Eglinton Ave W). Which court hears a matter is decided by where the ticket was issued, not where you live, and it is printed on the notice you were served.
Do I have to attend court in Toronto in person?
In most Provincial Offences matters, no. A licensed paralegal can appear on your behalf at Toronto Provincial Offences Court, so you generally do not need to take a day off work. You would normally only attend in person if the matter goes to trial and your own evidence is required.
How do I get disclosure for a Toronto ticket?
Disclosure — the officer's notes, any speed-measuring device records and calibration, and any video — is requested through the Provincial Offences office that administers Toronto Provincial Offences Court. It is the foundation of any real defence, and nothing sensible can be decided about a charge before it has been reviewed.
