Why Ontario licences get suspended.

Ontario has several separate suspension tracks. We focus on the first one — unpaid Provincial Offences fines — and the driving-under-suspension charges that follow from it.

  • Unpaid traffic finesOur focus

    When Provincial Offences fines go unpaid, the Ministry of Transportation suspends your driver's licence under HTA s.46. The suspension lifts once the fines are paid or placed on an approved extension-of-time-to-pay schedule.

  • Too many demerit points / novice escalation

    Fully licensed drivers face suspension at 15 demerit points; G1 and G2 drivers escalate much sooner and can be suspended at far lower totals.

  • Criminal Code suspensions

    Impaired-driving, over-80, and refusal suspensions flow from the Criminal Code and are handled in criminal court — a different process from Provincial Offences matters.

  • Family Responsibility Office (FRO)

    Under HTA s.198.1, the Family Responsibility Office can direct a licence suspension for child- or spousal-support arrears.

  • Medical suspensions

    The Ministry can suspend a licence based on physician reports or fitness-to-drive concerns. These are appealed through the Licence Appeal Tribunal.

  • Unsatisfied court judgment (HTA s.198)

    An unpaid civil judgment arising from a motor-vehicle accident can trigger a licence suspension until the judgment is satisfied.

How reinstatement works when the suspension is for unpaid fines.

    Pull your ICON driver record

    With your signed authorization, we obtain your Ministry ICON printout so we know exactly which fines are outstanding and at which courts.

  2. 02

    Arrange extension-of-time-to-pay

    We attend the relevant POA courts to request extension-of-time-to-pay so the Ministry can lift the suspension while you pay on a workable schedule.

  3. 03

    Defend the s.53 charge

    If you were also charged with driving under suspension (HTA s.53), we defend that charge in POA court in parallel — a conviction carries a further 6-month suspension.

My licence is suspended for unpaid fines. Can I get it back?

Usually yes. Once we know exactly what is owed and where — which we confirm from your Ministry (ICON) driver record — we can apply to the relevant Provincial Offences courts for an extension of time to pay. Once the fines are on an approved schedule, the Ministry can reinstate the licence.

What is an ICON printout and why do you ask for it?

ICON is the Ministry of Transportation's Integrated Court Offences Network. Your ICON printout lists every unpaid Provincial Offences fine against your name and which court holds it. Without it we would be guessing at what is outstanding, and a missed fine means the suspension stays in place.

I was charged with driving under suspension. Is that separate?

Yes. Driving while your licence is suspended is a Highway Traffic Act charge under s.53, carrying heavy fines and a further 6-month suspension on conviction. It runs separately from the administrative suspension, and we defend it in parallel with getting the underlying fines resolved.

Do you handle criminal, medical, or FRO suspensions?

No — our focus is provincial (Highway Traffic Act) driving matters, especially suspensions caused by unpaid traffic fines. Criminal Code, medical, and Family Responsibility Office suspensions follow different processes handled elsewhere.
