How a traffic charge works in York Region

York Regional Police polices all nine York Region municipalities through five districts, listed below. The OPP also lays charges in the region, and its Highway Safety Division lists its headquarters at 100 Bloomington Road West in Aurora; CN Police is the third service whose speed-device manuals York links on its disclosure page. On a speeding charge, York says the officer's notes will indicate which device was used, which tells you which of those manuals applies to your ticket.

Cheques for a York ticket are made out to The Regional Municipality of York, which both runs the Newmarket court and collects the fines. The front counter is walk-in only, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed civic and statutory holidays; the prosecution office keeps shorter hours, 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. York asks for a response within 15 days of receiving the ticket. On paytickets.ca, use location code 4960; York takes Visa or Mastercard credit only, and a new ticket can take up to 10 days to appear. York accepts a trial request signed under Option 3 on the second page or reverse side of the ticket and filed with the court, alongside online requests for early resolution (where available) and trials.

Anything that sends you to a Richmond Hill courthouse at 50 High Tech Road is out of date. York Region reports that in 2024 it combined its two Provincial Offences courthouses into a single location at 17150 Yonge Street, Newmarket, and Ontario's list of court offices now places both York codes at that address: 4960 for Newmarket and 4961, which Ontario still lists as 'Richmond Hill – York'. York says the location code is the first four digits of your offence number, and Ontario lists no York Region Provincial Offences court office other than 17150 Yonge Street, so a York ticket from Vaughan, Markham or Richmond Hill has nowhere else in the region to go.

However the ticket was issued, the three ways to respond are the same: pay the set fine, request anEarly Resolution meetingwith the prosecutor, or set the matter down for trial. Which is right depends on what thedisclosureshows — see the charge you are facing for how each one is defended.

Traffic charges in York Region — common questions

Can I get more time to pay a York Region fine?

File a Motion for Extension of Time to Pay the Fine. York accepts the completed motion by email to POACollections@york.ca, an address separate from the general CourtServices@york.ca inbox, or in person at 17150 Yonge Street, 2nd Floor, Newmarket. York Region is responsible for collecting Provincial Offences Act fines on tickets from this court.

My York Region ticket shows court code 4961 or mentions Richmond Hill — where is that court now?

Ontario's list of Provincial Offences court offices places code 4961, 'Richmond Hill – York', at the Newmarket courthouse, 17150 Yonge Street, 2nd floor, Newmarket L3Y 8V3, with the email NewmarketPOA@york.ca, the same address and email as the Newmarket code, 4960. York Region's current court pages list Newmarket only and make no mention of the former courthouse at 50 High Tech Road. Neither York Region nor Ontario explains how 4961 files are handled today, so call 905-898-0425 to confirm your file before paying or filing anything.

What will York's prosecutors give me before an early resolution meeting?

Only the officer's notes. York's disclosure page says that is all the prosecutor provides for an early resolution meeting, even though you ask for it through the same Part I channels. Once a trial date is scheduled, request full disclosure through York's online Part I form, by email to 4960disclosure@york.ca, in person, or by mail, including your name, address, telephone number and ticket number. After a collision that led to a Part I summons, York asks you to wait at least two weeks after the offence date. The Prosecution Office emails disclosure to the address on your request.

How is it decided whether my Newmarket appearance is on Zoom or in person?

York Region does not say. York holds early resolution meetings, hearings and trials online or in person in Newmarket but does not publish how a matter is assigned to one or the other. Before joining by Zoom, read the Remote Hearing Code of Conduct that York posts alongside the courtroom meeting IDs on its Preparing for a Trial page.

I missed my trial date in Newmarket — how do I get a York Region ticket reopened?

File a Record of Reopening Application within 15 days of becoming aware of the conviction; that route is for drivers who were given an offence notice (a ticket). York accepts the application by email to NewmarketPOA@york.ca, by mail, or in person at 17150 Yonge Street, Newmarket, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A Justice of the Peace reviews your reasons for missing the trial, and York notes the reopening may or may not be granted. For a charge started by a summons, York warns that missing the hearing can lead to a warrant for your arrest, and that the trial and sentencing can go ahead without you.
